Literature Analysis #3

1. In the novel Looking For Alaska by John Green it introduces Miles Halter who is beginning his first year at Culver Creek High School. Miles meets his new roommate, The Colonel, who introduces him to new things like smoking and most importantly Alaska. Throughout the book these teenager are looking for "The Great Perhaps". Miles begins to fall deeply in love with Alaska but he isn't so sure if she feels the same way. Alaska, Miles and The Colonel constantly pull pranks but they want one to be a one to remember so they plan a huge prank and it all turns to the worst.

2.I would say the theme is discovering yourself. By the end of the book almost every character has figured something out about themselves because of the experiences they have been through.

3. The tone of the story mostly revolves around a tragedy but also the story contains tones of bitterness and there is a tone of hopefulness at the end of the story.

4.In the book it uses personification for example, "Bur even in the dark I could see her eyes- fierce emeralds." Also another literary element the novel uses us metaphors one example would be "Be present in this class. And then when its over, be present out there."

5. "I hated being careful too- or wanted to at least.", shoes direct characterization. Miles saying this shows he wants to change himself from being to careful because he doesn't like that trait about himself. "What you must understand about me is that I am deeply unhappy person."(Direct) In this quote it reveals that Alaska may have a personality that everyone else knows but on the inside she is unhappy."If people were rain I was drizzle and she was a hurricane."(Indirect) Pudge(Miles) says this showing that he can see people like Alaska as more than normal. It shows he can notice traits about people easily.

Expository Composition

1 June 2014

Open Source Learning, what is it exactly? In the beginning of the course I had no

clue I just thought it was another project that we had to be pushed into. After awhile it became

something I began to really enjoy, collaborating with students, being able to hack the course it

gave us the ability to benefit us instead of learning out of a boring textbook that had nothing

really to offer us. Through the process of Open Source Learning it gave me a new perspective

on how a teacher actually cares and has every intention for us to succeed. Its great that Dr.Preston

gave us the the classroom instead of going by his agenda and his rules it gives us the freedom

that every class should have. I kind of get why teachers would be against the idea of letting

the students hack the course but its actually a brilliant idea! Giving the students to take matters in

their owns hands to see if they can make something out of it or not basically giving use a sense

of the real world.

Throughout the semester we got to work on our 'Masterpiece' and in decided to make my

masterpiece about the career  I want to be in which is being a CRNA. Having to do research

and getting familiar with this field gave me a stronger passion to get all my schooling done

and just having a plan where I want to see myself in the future. Working on my masterpiece

did give me the connection I really needed to push myself to where I want to be and making

it happen instead of having an idea and not acting on it. Being able to have a connection in

becoming a CRNA only makes me excited for my future and it helped me figure out that this is

actually something Im really passionate about and that realization changed my whole view on where

I see my life going.

I have always thought that English is such a boring subject that I'd never see myself liking. But

having this class really changed the way I look at english because i surprisingly liked it. My senior

year english class has probably been the best english class I've had all my high school life! And

I just find it funny because english has never been a subject that I would never see myself grown

to liking. English has always consisted of reading and writing and Ive always had struggled with

writing. I could never really had the ability to write down what i was thinking but having to

routinely write journals and doing literature analysis helped give me the stepping stones to improve

on my writing and I think Ive improved drastically. I just think its funny because I despised

reading and writing and I have grown to reading on a daily basis and loving to write all my thoughts

and opinions.

This whole week we got to present and see other peoples masterpieces, some peoples masterpieces

consisted of what they loved doing like their hobbies and such. One masterpiece that really stood

out to me would have to Shane's. His masterpiece was on his loves of music and he explained

the Flo Theory which is getting so lost in what you're doing because its what you're passionate

about. It made me realize that its crazy that sometimes you get so lost you that it just becomes so

natural. I left the same exact way when I was doing my masterpiece. Daniels and Jakes masterpieces

really caught my eye because its what they have been passionate about for so long that they want to

pursue a career in. Daniels masterpiece was about his love for cooking and he actually brought food

for us to try(which was delicious by the way) and shared his experiences at working at Rooney's

and someday opening up his own restaurant. Its just really inspiring to see other peoples passion. Jake

talked about his love for animals and how it inspired him to become a Vet. Jake shared his experiences

with working with a vet and shared some stores about the animals he helped. You can just tell that

its something they really enjoyed because just by the way they presented it and the way they came

across. Jorge's was another masterpiece that I really connected too! Jorge's masterpiece was about

breaking and hoe he got into it and his progress. His passion for breaking brought him to make

a breaking crew at Righetti. Its really moving to see that if you put your mind to it you can

accomplish anything. Chance's masterpiece was another one that I really enjoyed because it is what

he loved to do which is play baseball. He explained that he would just get so lost in baseball that it

wasn't just a game it was his life. Its just amazing to see all these masterpieces a lot of them were

really inspiring which i grew a connection with.

Its weird to consider myself as a hero but in a way I kind of am. I consider a hero as someone who

conquers obstacles without giving up and can be admired by it. And I have conquered obstacles

that I would of never thought. Beginning of senior year I had no idea what i wanted to be or where

i wanted to go. Now my senior year is ending and I figured out what exactly what i want to be

and the steps to take it. My life has been one crazy maze that i thought i would never make out but

now i have finally found the path to get out of this confusing mess and I can't wait to see what the

future has in store.

Beginnings

My masterpiece has given me the realization that nursing is always going to be a big part of my life not only because its what Im going to do for the rest of my life but its the passion I have for it. Doing research on my masterpiece opened my eyes to endless possibilities that are out there in the world. It just really feels great knowing what exactly I want to do in life and knowing the steps how to get there it makes me feel confident to start this new chapter in my life.

Connections

3-5 moments in my day that reminded me in some way of my masterpiece:
1. Applying to college got me thinking about my masterpiece because my major is nursing and thats what my masterpiece is focusing on
2. My anatomy class has me constantly thinking of the main point of my masterpiece and how I just love learning new things about the human anatomy
3. And my english class where we constantly work on our masterpiece by getting new ideas and figuring out ways to make it better

Look at my brain

My  masterpiece shows how Im really determined to become a nurse and the time and work I put into it to show that this is what i really want to become. Even though its tough sometimes to figure out what to put toward my masterpiece I have came a long way with it and Im proud what i have accomplished so far.

Raising Digital Awareness

I believe that it is important to draw visitors to my site because its great to see and hear peoples feedback to your opinions and thoughts an maybe help/ collaborate with me on my masterpiece so I wont have just my opinion.

Right now I havent been fully committed to my blog and thats is going to change right away because I made this blog for people to se my thoughts on certain topics and just basically showing i have a voice.

The main step i need to to take to improve the value of my site visitors that I really need to start posting a lot more and show that im taking more of an active roll on my blog and not slacking off. I think that digital tools and human ideas/ interactions are both equally important. Digital tools can lead to human interactions.

After reading the article 'Recovery to Whom' it really made me think about how our future is going to turn out because of this economic downturn. The article states that 'nearly 16 percent of those in their mid 20's to mid 30's were in poverty in 2012', and it really makes me think if those high numbers of poverty happened in 2012 what does the future hold? Are we going to keep spiraling down or are we as a nation going to really work on the growth of the economy? It actually really worries me that my generation is going to have to suffer through these tough times. One thing that really caught my attention is what the article said about our generations education saying 'in the 20-to 34 age group are the best educated cohort in American history'. Having to read that really irritated me because does that mean if I pursue to go to college that it really wont pay off in the long run because education doesn't create jobs and opportunities that lead you to prosperity(said in the article)? But isn't education suppose to lead you to prosperity and now I'm being told that it doesn't because of how bad the economy is? Its really unfair and absurd that we have to be put in this predicament and how our economy cant find a way out of this downturn.

Some questions id like to ask a mentor would be what is the hardest part in being in this field? What type of person will succeed in this line of work?

Literature Analysis #2

1. In Perks of Being a Wallflower a boy named Charlie is learning to cope with the suicide of his best friend and he begins to write letters to a stranger which he calls his "friend". As coping with the suicide of his best friend isnt enough, Charlie also had to deal with the stresses of stepping into a new world called high school. At school Charlie begins to make new friends. As Charlie breaks out of his shyness he begins to get really close to Patrick and Patricks step-sister Sam, which they later become best friends. Throughout the school year Charlie gets introduced to drugs, partying, his first kiss, losing friends and gaining them back. Through all this chaos Charlie basically makes a soundtrack of his life for the time being and reads loads of amount of books.

2. In this book I think that is has all kinds of different themes because it speaks to us in different ways but what i really got out this book being able to find your true self, it may not be so easy you will probably fall along the way but being able to pick yourself back up is what you should strive for.

3."I'm really glad that Christmas and my birthday are soon because that means they will be over soon because I can already feel myself going to a bad place I used to go." Charlie gets associated with a lot of anxiety when birthdays and Christmas come around since they are filled with happy memories he gets overwhelmed.

4. One major technique the author uses is symbolism, for example Charlie travels through a tunnel a couple of times in the book with his two best friends, Sam and Patrick, and then by himself but when hes by himself it feels a little different. "It was me standing up in that tunnel with the wind over my face. Not caring if I saw downtown. Not even thinking about it. Because I was standing in the tunnel. And I was really there. And that was enough to make me feel infinite." When Charlie passes the tunnel with Sam and Patrick it feels a lot more meaningful. Tunnels can mean that there is a passage out of the dark and I think that's what the author might of wanted the emphasize. Irony is another element the author uses for example Charlie adores his Aunt Helen, always calling her his favorite person in the world. But Charlie doesn't remember what she would do to him. And I really think you can categorize the title under irony too because when Charlie makes new friends they call themselves wallflowers but the story doesn't point out the perks of it more or less talks about how bad things happen to all the characters.

Characterization
1. An example of direct characterization would be that Charlie keeps quiet most of the time in the beginning of the book and an example of indirect characterization is that Charlie is intelligent and shy.

2. Charlie doesnt really describe characters in full dictation he likes to keep it really simple in short when he describes certain people but when he describes his close friends like Sam and Patrick he really likes to describe them in full detail. When he describes Sam at times she tells us what she wears to the way she does her hair and the littlest expressions he makes but most importantly he describes how in love he is in with her.

3. Charlie is definitely a dynamic character! In the beginning Charlie was a shy person who didnt reall have much friends and never really had social life. But when he opened up to Sam and Patrick he was introduced to drugs, sex, parties which was all so new to him. He has his first kiss, first girlfriend, first love while hanging out with Sam and Patrick which made him change into a whole different person.

4. After reading Perks of Being a Wallflower i really became connected to all of the character and the meaning of the story. It really describes the teenage life in full detail falling in love, being heart broken, being introduced to drugs, drama, parties, transitioning into a new setting it all made a connection with me and with that being said I do feel that Charlie is a actual person not some character in a book!

Master Piece Essay #1

For my first topic I want to focus on why nursing is the field for me and why out of all the other fields in the world why particularly  this field stood out from all the rest and how i can see myself partaking this job for the rest of my life! I want to push towards the qualities it is to be a nurse and how it relates and intertwines with the qualities i have.

Launch

These past few weeks we have been talking about what we want to do with our lives and how this class can help jumpstart it. When I realized is that this class can help me communicate with people in the field i want to be in(Medical Field). It gives me the tools to collaborate with my peers to get advice and just different insights in a way I probably wouldnt have looked at. For me to start my goals in the Medical Field i really need to start researching and figuring out if this is exactly the right line of work for me. In order for me to feel confident I really need to convince myself that im a hundred percent dedicated to going to school for quite sometime and it will pay off in the long run and im ready to pretty much live in a different environment that im not really used to. But even though it might be a whole new world for me trying to become a CRNA, Im ready to prove to anyone that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. I want my dreams to become a reality and to accomplish that Im going to have to get more involved in the field i want to be in just to get a little gist of everything. In order for me to get a sense of reality in this is I think that maybe communicating with a CRNA would really help me to get more of an understanding and will help me make sure that this is the correct path to take.

Literature Analysis #1

1. Hazel grace is just a normal teenager who falls in love with a hottie named Augustus Waters, well i actually lied about the normal teenager, Hazel is anything but a normal she a teenager living with cancer and so is the boy who she falls in love with, Augustus. Throughout the book it describes their odd love life because it isnt like the usual teenage love its much more mature than that. Hazel constantly struggles with her health throughout the book, having to go the hospital and always having chest pains and breathing problems because of the kemo. And by the end of the book the unexpected happens.

2.For me the biggest theme from this book would be that no matter what life throws at you you have to make the best out of the situation that you possibly can. In the book the author gives us a character named Isaac who has to get eye surgery because of the cancer he has which is going to make him permanently blind. But despite all that the girl that he thought he was going to spend the rest of his life with dumps him. With all this emotional damaged Isaac does become a little depressed but it didnt stop him from living his life.

3."I went to support group for the same reason that I'd allowed nurses with a mere eighteen months of graduate education to poison we with exotically named chemicals: I wanted to make my parents happy."
Hazel tends to be straight forward a lot her condition actually made her that way because she knows that she is hitting the early stages of death and she doesnt want to be treated like some little kid who cant do anything for themselves.
"I didnt tell him that the diagnosis came three months after I got my first period. Like: Congratulations! Youre a women. Now die."
This quote always makes me laugh because just the way Hazel is just so frank makes me feel i should see things in  a new perspective.

4.Some literary element John Green uses in Fault in our Stars is irony. Hazel doesnt understand why Augustus feels its so important to leave a mark. But not trying to, Hazel leaves ends up doing it herself.Another literary element would be symbolism, Augustus Waters, water is an essential we need in life, without water life wouldnt be possible. Augustus shows Hazel how to live life even with the disease she has.

Hafta/Wanna

My perspective in life during and life after high school would have to be like comparing fire and ice, they are complete opposites! My high school life hasnt really taught me anything about reality! I have no idea how to pay bills even do my own taxes basically how to live on my own and it is partially my fault but i thought high school was a big step into reality when i was in 8th grade but once i got here nothing really changed much except it was a bigger school and there is so much more people. Once we all graduate and start our own lives i know for a fact we wont change in a heart beat its going to take time growing into and adult! And we will all take our old habits into our daily activities its only human nature to do so. One big thing we have to do in adulthood is balancing the things we want to do and the things we have to do and how to balance that exactly i wouldnt quite sure know the answer to that because ive really experienced it before but when i do i will be more delighted to tell you guys! My expectations on the world around me would have to be that its going to be tough in the beginning but we all learn and prosper and become mature adults with years of experience!

Visual Story telling

In the movie Murderball they use a lot of visual story telling for example when that one guy(blanking on his name at this moment) got back from rehab because of his condition of being paralyzed from the waist down, right when he got into the car they zoomed into the handicap sign they had hanging in the car emphasizing his condition. Another example would have to be when one of the guys on the rugby team described his dream on how that sometimes he dreams about flying and when he was flying he grew legs and arms and how he loved the feeling because it actually felt real! While he was describing his dream they showed a short little visual sketch just to get a feeling on how he felt in his dream

One thing i really want to demonstrate this semester is my determination i have to reach my goals and that becoming a nurse really means a lot to me because its what ive always wanted to be!

Profile on Courage

Today we watched murderball and it was so much different then what i expected it to be! Murderball is  a movie about people who have spinal problems and they play this rough game of rugby on wheelchairs. In the beginning of the movie we get introduced to a couple of the players and they explain their story but some of them didnt have spinal problems at birth some of them got it through tragic accidents. I really have to give a lot of props to these guys because they are just so strong and they dont want any pity because of the condition they have they just want to be treated like any other person.

The Choice

We all have to make choices in our life, some are harder than others but we pull through. I know I make choices on a daily basis whether it is something simple like whether to eat some cereal in the morning or eating some toast? But ive also made some really tough decisions that were difficult to deal with. One realization ive been though is realizing that someone so close to me, someone i trusted trusted with all my secrets becomes this negative energy in my life. No matter how hard i made excuses for that person the more exhausted and emotionally drained I became and who wants to make the choice not to have that person if your life anymore? Even though it was a hard decision to make it was also the best one ive made.

Vocab #1 Performance Review

For the most part i would have to say that i did pretty good on the vocab quiz! I studied all of the words and made sure i was using the words in sentences that made sense.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

The Choice

1. The choice is referred to in the title by the choice of whether he is making the choice to give his daughter the poison or if she will make the choice on taking it herself.

2. It is a real choice because the poison is actually the medicine for his daughters cancer and the reason why they call it that is because it is poisoning her cells. The alternative of not taking the drugs is that she will die and the worst part about the drug is that it might kill the good cells that she need for growth.

3. I think the author uses poison in the first line because he wants it to stand out in the article, to make it a appoint that it is the focal point.

4. I think the daughter wanted a chance to be able to play with toys that are for older kids because i think she might of had the thought that she wont be able to play with them in the future. And i do agree with her because if i were a parent going through the same situation theyre going through even though i would hate to think of the possibility of my daughter/son of dying i would still want them to feel they can conquer anything no matter the age they are.

5. If i thought i might not live to the age of 30 i would want to travel everywhere i had the chance too because that is always been a big dream of mine, to travel the world

6. Well in this article the daughter hates taking her medicine but her parents enforce it because they want her to get better. And even when she was going through chemo she had a bunch of tubes attached to her which the father describes on the look on her face she hated every second of it. But even through all this discomfort if their is a chance the daughter might have her sickness go away who wouldn't take the chance of all this discomfort to save her life.

7. I really don't think we need to suffer in our lives because if you are suffering whats the point of living? I know its a harsh thing to say but no one wants to suffer in throughout their life it just gets tiring after awhile.
